ERHD Program: Results from the National Medical Association Meetings

As promised, I am reporting on the results from our participation as Exhibitors at the National Medical Association meetings held in Washington, DC. from July 23-27th at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

This was the first time that the ERHD program displayed our Exhibit at a national conference. We had a table top exhibit highlighting our program along with our ERHD brochures. Our booth was located in the very front portion of the exhibit area so that everyone who entered, saw our display and materials.

The description of our booth in the National Medical Association program was as follows:

“A new graduate certificate program in ethnic and rural health disparities at East Carolina University uses the latest online technology to assist medical health professionals and public health administrators in not only obtaining additional expertise in ethnic and rural health disparities but also in developing culturally competent solutions for specific health disparity populations.”

Overall, I received alot questions and interests from medical and health professionals who wanted another way to get additional expertise in all types of health disparity issues. Additionally, professionals representing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were also interested. The ERHD program greatly benefited from participating in this national conference because it showed that our new, innovative program is still one-of-a-kind in the midst of all the other higher educational programs in the United States.

ERHD Program attending 2011 National Medical Association Conference

It gives me great pleasure to inform everyone that the ERHD program will be attending and exhibiting our promotional display at the National Medical Association (NMA) Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in Washington, DC from July 23 – 27th, 2011. We are excited about this opportunity to take part in the exhibit portion of the conference and showcase our program to all the participants of the conference.

The ERHD program will be recruiting interested medical and health professionals who want to improve their expertise in ethnic and rural health disparities as well as working on their particular institutions’ programs in developing culturally competent solutions for specific disparity populations. The five-day conference brings together thousands of professionals across the country who are interested in all areas of medical, clinical and public health activities. We therefore see this as a chance to share our program to those who may want to extend their skills in another area of medical care and public health intervention.

We also look forward in developing collaborative relationships with other higher education institutions that may need to develop a specific online program for graduate students in the area of ethnic health and health disparities. Our ERHD program provides an excellent opportunity for partnership with all types of institutions that are looking for innovative higher educational strategies to increase the expertise of their workforce, graduate students or medical/public health professionals.

The ERHD Graduate Certificate Online Program is accepting applications from qualified graduate students for Fall 2011. To obtain a graduate certificate in ethnic and rural health disparities, completion of 12 credit hours is required. The ERHD program consists of four online courses:

3. MPH 6008 Ethnic Health & Health Disparities
4. MPH 6009 Capstone Experience in Ethnic Health & Health Disparites

Students can complete the ERHD certificate in fifty weeks. Students can be either full-time or part-time. All qualified graduate students must meet the graduate school requirements and our ERHD program requirements.

ERHD Program Adds New Students for Spring 2011 Semester

The Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) had a successful start in the fall with the first set of exceptional student professionals beginning our program. Now, we are beginning the Spring 2011 semester and we are fortunate to have three more students to join our innovative graduate online program.

The new students will join our other ERHD students in taking the next course in our program which is “Ethnic Health and Health Disparities: MPH 6008.”. The Ethnic and Health Disparities course major objectives are:
1. Identify and assess the major health issues associated with specific ethnic and health disparity populations in the United States;
2. Describe ethnic health and health disparity issues, including its unique and important features; and
3. Apply principles and strategies derived from public health and medical anthropology toward planning, implementing and evaluating specific ethnic health and health disparities intervention programs.

This course is the cornerstone of our ERHD program and it allows all the student professionals to investigate, discuss, analyze and implement the type of programs that will REALLY work in ethnic and health disparity communities throughout our United States and globally. By the end of this course, therefore, student professionals will be empowered with a new set of professional skill sets that will separate themselves from ALL the OTHERS in the public health and medical fields who are attempting to do health disparities research and programming.

In my opinion, this type of intense, continual and higher educational training is DESPERATELY needed in public health and medical schools across the country. If you would like to receive this type of training, then the ERHD program is for you.

ERHD Scholarships for Spring 2011

The ERHD Scholarship committee announces the availability of ERHD Spring Scholarships. The ERHD Scholarships are available to full-time or part-time graduate students with an interest in health disparities who will enroll and complete the East Carolina University ERHD graduate certificate online program. Candidates for the $1,000 scholarships will be asked to write a 500 – 1000 word essay describing their interests in ethnic and rural health disparities. Academic performance, work experience and leadership skills will also be evaluated. A limited number of scholarships are available.

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome all Ethnic & Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) students to our brand new graduate certificate online program! It has been somewhat of a long-time coming yet now we are here together to start this new public health and medical training initiaitive.

The first course in the ERHD program is: GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH: MPH 6007.

Global Public Health explores the issues related to the fields of medical anthropology and public health leading toward developing global health interventions. The three major course objectives are:
1. Identify and assess the major components of medical anthropology and public health as they relate to global public health issues.
2. Identify and discuss the major global public health concerns of specific populations from one country to another.
3. Apply principles and strategies derived from medical anthropology and public health toward planning, implementing and evaluating global public health intervention programs.

Our unique approach in using podcast/webcast lectures along with specific assignments through the discussion board and chatroom sessions will enable you to complete an outstanding culturally competent global public health fieldwork project/proposal by the end of the course.

Co-Director Dr. Justin Moore and I are delighted that you have been the first to be selected to be apart of our program and we look forward to many more interested public health and medical professionals to participate in our program whether as full-time or part-time students. With the official approval of the ERHD program last month and now the evaluation of applicants for the ERHD program, we are very excited about the start of the Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities Graduate Certificate Online Program this coming Fall 2010! Fortunately, our ERHD program was granted extra time this spring to continue to allow interested students to apply for the fall 2010 start. We have already received outstanding applications from interested professionals and we hope to receive more in the weeks to come.

All professionals who are still interested in applying to our program whether it’s for the Fall 2010 or Spring 2011, the following materials are required:

1. Transcript
2. GRE or MCAT Scores
3. Writing Sample
4. Letter of Interest
5. Recommendation Letter

In addition, we also have limited scholarships available to assist students with the partial cost of a class in the ERHD certificate online program.

Reminder: The ERHD Graduate Certificate Online Program consist of the following courses:

ERHD Graduate Certificate Program “OFFICIALLY APPROVED!”

Yesterday was a historic day for our program!

We were officially approved by the Chancellor of East Carolina University to start our graduate certificate online program for the university. This is a day that I had envisioned for the past 5 years when I started brainstorming the ideal about creating a certificate program specifically for ethnic and rural health disparity populations particularly since ECU and eastern North Carolina is an ideal setting and institution to lead a public health training initiative such as this one.

From the MPH students in my first courses taught at ECU (5 years ago) in the traditional face-to-face lecture style to today’s online Department of Public Health courses, I am thrilled to make these special courses AVAILABLE for more individuals who want and need this specialized training in ethnic and rural health disparities. Whether its one course or completion of the entire certificate program courses (12 credit hrs), graduates will come away from this program with a brand new set of public health skills and perspectives that will be unique, special and timely for our ever-changing, ethnically-diverse, rural populations in the United States and globally.

This is a new program that is already sponsored by our federal government — Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services. They have been instrumental in assisting us with the initial infrastructural setup as well as our ability to offer scholarships for those who qualify and enroll into the graduate certificate online program.

I also want to thank the key administrators, coordinators, committee members, council members, department chairpersons, faculty members, Dean of Brody School of Medicine, and family members who supported me each and every step of this certificate program.

Now it’s time to get busy!

ERHD Graduate Certificate Online Program Approved by EPPC Committee

Greetings Everyone,

Just to keep you updated on the progress of the ERHD Graduate Certificate Online Program, yesterday I presented the program before the Educational Policies and Planning Committee (EPPC). By the end of the meeting, the EPPC approved our ERHD Graduate Certificate Online program.

The next step is to request approval of the certificate program from Academic Council.

I will keep you posted.

ERHD Certificate Gets Approved by GCC

Greetings Everyone,

A few days ago, I learned that our ERHD Graduate Certificate Program was approved by the university’s Graduate Curriculum Committee (GCC) on October 21st. After this approval, it moved to our Graduate School Administrative Board (GSAB) and it was approved at this level committee also.

Now our Certificate proposal moves to the next level of committee evaluation and hopefully approval.

That’s the latest from our innovative, ground-breaking Graduate Certificate Program in Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities.
