Tagging onto last week’s post

About engaging students with video polling, quizzing and commenting extends to current events.  Anyone remember H1N1 virus, well a posting done on this blog in September 2009 addresses being prepared.  With Blackboard and Canvas content can be delivered and Mediasite Desktop Recorder and Canvas Studio are ways to record lectures, give updates and keep everyone informed.

Here is a link to a Mediasite Webinar on Friday to Optimize your Plan

Additionally since next week is Spring Break if you are not comfortable with desktop recording or need to use devices such as document camera, most of the classrooms here at HSB will be available to do recordings.

Just came across my desk 9 Resources when Corona Virus Moves Your Course Online

Teaching Online? Here is a tip which is even good for Face to Face!

I was reading an article about making an online course great and this one tip really stood out to me –

“Explain the purpose of the various modules and content to the students, as well as why particular technology is being used for the various activities. As one instructor observed, “The students need to understand what it is that they are reaching for and how we are going to get through.”

Happy New Year, New Decade and New Semester!

Lots of new!  Many are trying the new LMS Canvas, remember to post in Blackboard that your course is being offered in Canvas and provide the link.

All rooms have the Turning Point Response ware to use with either PowerPoint or quick questions and students can use their phone or computer to answer questions.

All general classrooms now have the ability to use Presenter view from the room computer, note the icons on the desktop.

And now the end is near

Last Wednesday in the semester, for those remaining classes here is a fun way to check that they have been reading and listening.  Turning Point Cloud, login with your ECU credentials, click to connect to ResponseWare and you can use your PowerPoint presentation or Anywhere Polling to check on what has been retained.  Students download the app on their phone, tablet or laptop.  Enter the code to connect and you are on your way!  Contact this office for a demo to do it your way!

Yes it is!

Only 3 weeks to Thanksgiving break, 4 weeks to reading day and finals begin! But not to belabor that point here are some tips for keeping above water.

  • It is harder for your students, you’ve been here before
  • Calendar activities and set reminders
  • Make notes on what worked and what didn’t (this will help when you transition Fall 2019 BB courses to Canvas Fall 2020)
  • Make lists, there are various programs and apps which can be used to help keep you on track, many available through Office 365  such as To Do, OneNote, Class Notebook, and Teams.  Get used to using One Drive to store your files as you can link them with Canvas.
  • Take a break and watch a funny video, movie or walk outside!

What are your tips???

Still available, easy to use and here’s a new feature!

Turning Point and location-based attendance, see how it’s done!

Here’s an interesting article using the tool Increase participation by reducing anxiety

Polling Options

As an instructor, you can create instant polling questions from Web content, PDF’s, Microsoft Office products, whiteboards and more. In addition, you can create and save quizzes or create interactive presentations in a PowerPoint format. Grades from polled responses can also be downloaded into the Blackboard Grade Center.

Clicker & Receiver Options

Instructors may choose to have students purchase a physical clicker or by allowing them to respond using the free TurningPoint mobile app. Mobile device polling comes at no additional out-of-pocket cost to students. From https://itcs.ecu.edu/services/educational-technologies/clickers/

Not death by PowerPoint!

Try these I recently found on a random search

PowerPoint Presentation Hack #1. Use Poll Everywhere To Ask Your Audience Questions and Keep Them Engaged – available in all classrooms

PowerPoint Presentation Hack #2. Use Control + B to Make The Presentation Screen Black and Draw Attention Back to You – and see who is paying attention

PowerPoint Presentation Hack #3. Draw On Your Slides In Real Time During Your Presentation with Control + P – or use the display pen located on the display if presenting in the classroom at CAHS

Click this link to see more but one final

Hack #10. Zoom In and Out of Your Slides to Focus on Specific Areas – and I hope to have presenter view installed in all classrooms by fall to make this hack workable!

Adios!

Nos vemos en un par de semanas! or “See you in a couple of weeks”.  With the semester coming to a close I will be taking vacation from Tuesday afternoon 4/16 and will return Tuesday 4/30.  My assistant Imani Gilbert will be in the office for a few hours each day and may be able to assist.

Here are some tips for keeping students engaged in this final days.  You can use Turning Point Anywhere with mobile devices and quick questions no powerpoint needed.

Crunch time

Crunch Time
4 weeks til reading day and so much to cover.  Desktop recording and/or classroom capture may be ways to review content as well as adding content to be discussed in class or for additional study resource.  All of our general classrooms have what I call the Mediasite Easy Button, just select Mediasite and press Record, put the microphone on, turn it on (needs to be blinking green) and that’s it.  Oh and let me know after the fact so the recording can be published.
