You’ve heard about it, maybe even read about it, now…..

Oh hey there Panopto!  Such a pleasure to finally meet you.

As mentioned before, ECU has selected PANOPTO as our new Lecture capture software.

What is panopto And why would you use it?

Panopto is a tool integrated into Canvas that makes working with video easy, and it can be used for recording lectures or presentations, uploading an existing video, or embedding videos with content in other parts of the Canvas site.

The Panopto implementation is still in the beginning stages, but my goal is to keep you all abreast as much as I can during the process.  Next week, active Mediasite users will receive details about our transition to Panopto.  The email will include an invitation for faculty to participate in the Panopto early adopter group.  I would like to encourage all that currently use Mediasite to take advantage in this opportunity to learn more about our new lecture capture system —> Panopto. As always, if you have any specific questions regarding our transition please don’t hesitate to comment here or email me.

Humanizing Online Learning Webinar (hosted by LinkedIn Learning)
October 14 | 1:00 PM | Register for the Webinar

Description: Humanizing learning includes cultural awareness and inclusiveness, as well as social presence—the ability to interact authentically with peers across all teaching and learning. To address the structural inequalities and exclusions found in our society and in an academia, administrators, employees, instructors and students must work together to create an environment that supports all learners in their quest for safety, belonging and achievement.

Laura Gogia PhotoSpeaker: Dr. Laura Gogia, Research Director, Learning Technologies & Student Success, Tambellini Group. Dr. Gogia researches, advises, and publishes on pedagogy, student experience, and academic technology. She has extensive experience in online learning design and faculty development across higher education.

Most recently, she served as Director of LX Innovation at iDesign, where she conceived and edited the iDEA book, an open educational resource (OER) on digital instructional design for faculty and online learning professionals. Before embracing education, she practiced medicine in rural Virginia.

Archived presentations to be deleted unless you act soon

New Mediasite Archive Plan Began July 1, 2021

Mediasite is ECU’s video capture tool for academic courses and campus events. We recently updated and automated the storage process for Mediasite content to keep presentations organized while reducing storage and administrative costs.

This past July, Mediasite administrators processed videos according to the following criteria. The report captured the age and number of views for all Mediasite videos older than 24 months.

  • All videos are active in Mediasite for the first 24 months regardless of views and are not included in the annual audit report.
  • A video with 10 or more views during the previous 24 months remains in Mediasite.
  • A video with fewer than 10 views during the previous 24 months was archived and will be deleted on September 29. Deleted videos cannot be recovered.
  • Owners were notified by email of any archived videos.
  • Owners may request that any video slated for deletion be exported into a “Publish to Go” format by submitting a Mediasite Support service request before September 28.

*All videos are active in Mediasite for the first 24 months regardless of views and are not included in the annual audit report.

Recovery and export available until September 28, 2021

You have until September 28 to request that archived videos be exported into a Publish To Go format. Submit the Mediasite Support service request. After a video is deleted it cannot be recovered.

Auto Archival of Mediasite Recordings

In recent Technology news it was announcement an archival plan will be instituted.

Beginning July 1, 2021, Mediasite administrators will audit and process videos according to the following criteria.

An audit report runs annually on July 1

The report captures the age and number of views for all Mediasite videos older than 24 months.* Depending on the number of views, videos are processed as follows:

  • A video with 10 or more views during the previous 24 months remains in Mediasite.
  • A video with fewer than 10 views during the previous 24 months is archived for 90 days then deleted.
  • Owners are notified by email of any archived videos.
  • Owners may also request a video be exported into a “Publish to Go” format during the 90-day archive period (July 1 – September 28), by submitting a Mediasite Support service request.
  • Archived videos are deleted after 90 days.

*All videos are active in Mediasite for the first 24 months regardless of views and are not included in the annual audit report.

Technology Tailgate

Celebrating Successful Teaching Strategies

Online Symposium April 30th SAVE THE DATE

We invite you to CELEBRATE making it through an entire year in a pandemic. On April 30th, ECU will host a Technology Tailgate where we would like for you to share your successes in teaching during the pandemic. The format will be 20 minute sessions on every half hour from 9 until 4. During the 20 minutes, you can share your stories, strategies, best practices, interesting pandemic assignments, and tips for success.

We received many positive comments on a similar symposium in the fall.

If you would like to participate as a presenter and/or a moderator, please fill out the form at this link. We just need your time preference (morning or afternoon), a title, and short description of what you are going to talk about for the online program. Deadline to submit, March 31st.

You have a phone?

But there is no recorder in that lab?  Use your phone, make sure you turn it horizontal and record that demonstration.  Once recorded upload to My Mediasite or Studio.   Webcams (if broadcasting the demo) and phones can be mounted on a tripod which creates a steadier recording and are available through our office.

OET has two cameras that can be borrowed by departments and we just acquired an additional portable Mediasite recorder that can be connected in a lab.  Webcams and phones can be mounted on a tripod which creates a steadier recording and are available through our office.

Want to see how something works?

You are enrolled as a student in the Canvas Kiosk of Information (formerly BB Kiosk).  There is a lot of information there but this course can give you the real feel of being a student.  There is information on Canvas and other technologies we are all using now, Teams, WebEx, Polling, Mediasite.  There is a Turning Point quiz that you can give in class but also schedule remotely, check it out.  If you want to see how something works and it is not there let us know and we can try it out, like groups???

It’s certainly going to take Teamwork!

As we make plans to return to classrooms I have been asked about Mediasite Live Recordings and students viewing synchronously how might they best ask questions without having to run a simultaneous webconferencing session.

The Teams app will be available in the general classrooms, open Teams either on the classroom computer, a separate computer or mobile device.  Students can send via chat questions during class which you can then respond to in real time.

Want to try it out?  Just open teams, open chat, click new chat and enter my name or a colleagues, it is that simple.
