Virtually going nowhere

Here is a neat inforgraphic on the use of video in the past months

Virtual-Learning-Never-Sleeps

Here are some other statistics from Mediasite remember total presentation number is for all presentations on our site for the past 3+ years nor desktop recordings not in a shared folder.

There is a lot of video being viewed whether Canvas, Conferencing Recordings or Mediasite.  Before you don’t remember review content and possibly give a more descriptive name so searching in the future is easier, especially Guest Lectures.

Updated Collaboration Features for Teams and Webex

Microsoft Teams has tweaked the desktop app to improve your meeting experience. Most of the updates, like pop-out meetings, can be switched on now (see steps in the above link)

Other features are being fine-tuned and will launch within the next few days.

Cisco Webex Experience

Webex launched the new 40.9 in-meeting experience, and  updates the interface through several optimized and improved features.

Intuitive audio and video settings preview

The audio selection menu has been moved to a more prominent position over the Join Meeting button. Now you’re less likely to forget checking audio settings BEFORE joining your meeting.

Also, the larger preview window lets you actually check your “meeting face.”

Streams from Teams and Permissions

From https://ecu.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/1409/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=67559

Make sure you apply the appropriate viewing permissions when uploading a video. Permissions at the video level allow you to control who can see your video, who can own and edit it and assign access from within groups and channels. When you upload a video into Stream, you have the option to select, Allow everyone in your company to view this video. Any users with an ECU Microsoft 365 account can see the video and add it to their groups and/or channels. The Shared with field is where you select who can view/own your video and in which groups/channels. Use the drop-down to search and select viewers.

Recordings can be uploaded to Mediasite or Studio to maintain a repository for future use.

Want to see how something works?

You are enrolled as a student in the Canvas Kiosk of Information (formerly BB Kiosk).  There is a lot of information there but this course can give you the real feel of being a student.  There is information on Canvas and other technologies we are all using now, Teams, WebEx, Polling, Mediasite.  There is a Turning Point quiz that you can give in class but also schedule remotely, check it out.  If you want to see how something works and it is not there let us know and we can try it out, like groups???

Just Talk, don’t Teach

We have been having Socialization chats twice a week, more and more folks are popping in and it’s a great way to share during this stressful time.  As we enter the last two weeks of the very

different (to say the least) Spring 2020 semester set up a socialization time with your class, not a Q&A, not a lesson, not a teaching moment but a time to check in and really see how they are doing and for some it will be the last time for those that are graduating.

Taking it online this summer!

As we all adapt to this new wave of teaching/learning it is also time to think ahead to Summer Classes.  All to be delivered by alternative delivery.

Your summer courses for 2020 are available in Canvas and now is the time to make the move rather than waiting until the Fall deadline.  There are lots of Canvas resources at it’s homepage. Online trainings will be available as well as the many tutorials at this site.

This office is available for virtual trainings to assist with this transition with a group and/or individually, send a request.

Presenting Online? No Choice

As a long time advocate for online delivery and knowing that many are not comfortable with this delivery system I am going to share some simple tips.

First – accept my Team invite as your colleagues may be some of your best resources.

Second- Keep it Simple, you know your content so deliver it.  If Mediasite Desktop Recorder or Studio or YouTube are intimidating you can create a voice-over PowerPoint for deliver.

Third – Keep in touch with your students whether by email, chat, try webconferencing for real time communication and there is always the phone.

Fourth – if something doesn’t work, take a deep breath, try again or put it aside and work on something else.

Here’s a new link with a crash course for smaller classes, labs and assessment from the North Carolina School of Science and Math is a leader in providing synchronous education. They’ve opened up some of their training to others in the UNC System.

Engaging Students

Mid-semester, spring break and still a lot to learn!

Quizzing mid-video to measure progress, Polling to see if they understand in real time.  Students can also comment and discuss during the recording and then annotate with additional comments and dialogs.  Additionally students can email questions directly to you.  Create a collection of video tutorials, topics etc with channels and showcases.

A Student Engagement article from Mediasite can be found here

You can also use Studio in Canvas to complete many of the tips introduced.

Need to Meet? – Try One of These

WebEx – access directly from ECU hamburger menu or the app, schedule a meeting or start directly once you access.  Recordings can be recorded and shared.

Teams

Microsoft Teams boasts many more convenient messaging features, like

  • Individual chat. Message any of your contacts and pick up the conversation anytime, anywhere even if it was last week, last month or this morning.
  • Teams chat. Create a “channel” within a project team so everyone can trade ideas together.
  • Office app integration. See this Microsoft article for both desktop and mobile app features.
  • Share Files. Just like Skype, you can attach files to a chat.

Big Blue (Canvas) – The Conferences interface is displayed using BigBlueButton’s HTML5 conferencing system. Conferences interface to moderate and participate in the conference. Any user who starts a conference or an instructor who joins the conference will be given moderator permissions. Moderators can demote other moderators to viewers.
