Yammer while you wait

From the Yammer Blog “Did you know that Yammer is a great way to kickstart conversation inside and outside the classroom?  How?”  Well rather than me telling you here is what one of your colleagues, Kim Stokes has to say about using Yammer!

“We use Yammer as a communication platform for our clinical year students. It’s a great way to make class wide announcements when each student is in a very different course. We make a private page for each class so we can chat away. The students can answer each other’s questions sometimes in the main page and we can poll students and get feedback quickly. We pin documents to the wall that are of upmost importance (evaluations, manuals, etc) and we can private message persons when we need to discuss personal information.

I personally do not have outlook on my phone to get a break from work when I”m not at work. But I always worry about student emergencies. The Yammer app allows students to reach me if there is an emergency without having to give out my cell to them (which I do anyway) and it also  makes reaching me really easy. The app puts instant notifications on their phone re: Yammer notes/messages.

I love it. Yes, there are some things I’d tweak, but I love it overall.”

So why Tweet?

Or why not?  I will admit I have not embraced this technology but I am exploring it’s use in higher ed and have found some articles which tempt me to continue in this endeavor.  If you use “tweets” as part of your class or were thinking of incorporating them into class let me know and we can explore together.
