2020 Fall – Third Place in Greenville NC

This Fall the sophomore class returns to using flue-cured tobacco barns to create a Third Place here in Greenville NC.  This hypothetical gathering space would be located within the area designated for ECU’s Millenial Campus.

Portfolio 1 contains students’ preliminary research and design sketches.

Portfolio 2 follows the students’ work in AutoCAD as they define their designs in 2D hardline drawings.

Portfolio 3 transitions to 3D modeling in SketchUp.

The final portfolio takes the form of a video walkthrough of each student’s design.  The links below the other portfolios will take you to these.

2019 Fall – Retail Incubator Space in Greenville NC

This semester, students are designing a product display/presentation space in the historic Hughes Tobacco Warehouse in Greenville.  This space is designed to offer students and professors a place to meet with business people, to discuss ideas for product development.

Portfolio 1 includes preliminary Quick Sketch Competency exercises, Music as Design Inspiration, Activity Space Studies, and draft Circulation Plans.

Portfolio 2 introduces Schematic Design with AutoCAD location studies for a food prep area and service counter, hand-drawn Problem Resolution Sketches, Preliminary Furniture Plans, and Stair Plans and Sections.

Portfolio 3 continues Schematic Design with a final furniture plan, development of a SketchUp model, and creation of a walkthrough video.

And Portfolio 4 took us into an initial exploration of Revit.

2018 Fall – Third Place – Prototyping and Testing

2016 – SketchUp/Photoshop

As they do each year, the sophomores have taken their reception area design from AutoCAD into SketchUp to explore varied 3D views of the space.  After adding materials in SketchUp, they then exported some of their scenes to Photoshop to add exterior context, figures, and lighting.  Students also rendered a furniture and reflected ceiling plan in Photoshop.  And finally, the students captured a video walkthrough of their SketchUp model.
