2021 Fall – Furniture Showroom Design in Greenville NC

This semester, the junior interior design class once again creates a pop-up showroom, this time for Herman Miller.  The site is the same as last Fall’s: three existing storefronts at the corner of 5th and Cotanche Streets in Greenville.

Portfolio 1 addresses programming.

Portfolio 2 follows each student’s design process.

Portfolio 3 includes final plans and sections.

2020 Fall – Furniture Showroom Design in Greenville NC

This semester, amidst the Covid 19 pandemic, the students are tasked with developing a space in Greenville, based on the Teknion Design Challenge competition.

The competition raises the following challenge: “Through the lens of the pandemic, shifting culture and perspective, how must the office rise to the occasion that the future of work demands?”  Competitors are to design an inspired social space that supports physical distancing and uses Teknion products.

The students’ challenge is to create a Teknion showroom in Greenville, keeping the goal of social distancing in mind.

Portfolio 1 encompasses research and identification of project parameters and problems.

Portfolio 2 begins to study the schematic design via rough sketches.

Portfolio 3 looks at final plans, perspective views, furniture and finish selections.

2019 Fall – Senior Living Condo in Greenville NC

Once again students are tasked with creating a condo designed for aging in place.

Portfolios 1 & 2: After initial research, the class began planning an individual unit.  They clustered these units to create the form of the building.  Then they focused on a model apartment.

Portfolio 3: The students were asked to design an individual unit for a lesbian couple moving to Greenville NC from Pittsburgh PA.  One member of the couple is deaf, and one of their children who lives nearby is in a wheelchair.  In addition to considering how to accommodate these physical challenges, each student was given a historical design style that had to be incorporated into their design.  A walkthrough video with narrative voice-over completes their design process.

2016 Fall – Senior Living Condo – Final Schematics

Students completed the design and decoration of a unit within their retirement condo building in Greenville NC.  Their hypothetical clients were a lesbian couple from Pittsburgh PA, one of whom is deaf.  Pat and Fran also have a wheel-chair bound daughter in Fayetteville NC.

In addition to Universal Design considerations (for accessibility and aging in place), the students had to incorporate historical precedent into the home.  And each student created a narrative relative to the project.  Please click on the links below to view each slideshow.
